Argentina residency for retirees and investors

Argentine temporary residence as a rentista or pensionado lets foreigners live in Argentina on passive income or a pension from abroad worth at least five national minimum wages a month. In October 2026 that equals ARS 1,956,000. Applications are filed inside Argentina through the RaDEX system. It suits retirees, investors and remote founders.

Updated

Article 23 of Law 25.871 lists the temporary residence categories. A rentista supports their stay with own resources brought from abroad, the income they produce or other lawful foreign income; a pensionado receives a pension from a government, an international organisation or a private company for services performed abroad. The law allows up to three years, renewable, with multiple entries; the DNM's rentista service page currently states a first grant of one year, renewable.

DNM Disposition 1732/2023, as amended in October 2023, sets both thresholds at five national minimum wages a month. For rentistas the income must come from assets such as financial instruments, property or company holdings, not from personal work, and the funds must enter Argentina through institutions authorised by the central bank. Resolution 4/2026 raises the minimum wage every month, from ARS 391,200 in October 2026 to ARS 437,000 in April 2027.

Applications start online in RaDEX and continue at an in-person appointment; you must be in Argentina. You need the Argentine criminal record, obtained within RaDEX, and certificates from every country where you lived for more than a year in the last three years, apostilled or legalised and translated by an Argentine public translator. The DNM states that applications are personal and need no intermediary; outside help is mainly about preparing a consistent file and planning tax.

Remote workers from visa-exempt countries can instead request a transitory digital nomad residence of 180 days, extendable once. Since Decree 366/2025, residents without permanent status can be charged for non-emergency care in national public hospitals, so private health cover deserves attention. Licensed Argentine lawyers and accountants give the legal and tax advice; Redomiciled coordinates the file.

Tax notes

  • Argentine tax residents pay income tax on worldwide income and can credit foreign tax on foreign-source income.
  • Foreigners who live in Argentina for reasons other than work become tax resident from the thirteenth month of presence; foreigners assigned to work there for less than five years are generally treated as non-residents.
  • Rentista income, by definition, comes from assets abroad. Once you are tax resident, that income is within Argentine tax, so the structure holding your assets matters.
  • A licensed Argentine accountant should review the timing of your arrival and your asset structure before the thirteenth month.

General information, not tax advice. Your position depends on your circumstances.

Banking fit

  • Argentine banks are not in our network; the funds for a rentista file pass through an authorised local institution you choose.
  • Accounts outside Argentina can be planned through our banking assessment.
  • Keep transfer records from the start, because renewals rely on showing that the income kept arriving.

Questions

How do I get residency in Argentina?

Enter Argentina lawfully, then apply online in RaDEX and attend a DNM appointment. Rentistas prove passive income from assets of at least five minimum wages a month; pensionados prove a pension of the same amount. Foreign documents must be apostilled and translated by an Argentine public translator.

How much income does Argentina's rentista visa require in 2026?

Five national minimum wages a month. With the October 2026 minimum wage of ARS 391,200 that is ARS 1,956,000, and the amount rises as the minimum wage increases each month. The income must come from assets, not from work.

Can I get Argentine residency as a digital nomad?

Nationals of countries that do not need a tourist visa can request a transitory digital nomad residence of 180 days, extendable once for the same period, to work remotely for clients or employers abroad. It is filed in person, not through RaDEX.

How soon can I become an Argentine citizen?

Since Decree 366/2025, naturalisation by residence requires two years of continuous legal residence immediately before the application, with no trips abroad during that period. Provisional status while a residence application is pending does not count.

Does Argentina offer citizenship by investment?

Decree 366/2025 created a naturalisation route for a relevant investment, with the amount set by the Ministry of Economy and a dedicated agency to assess applications. The government announced programme terms in October 2026; check the published regulation before relying on them.

Will Argentina tax my foreign income?

Once you are an Argentine tax resident, yes: residents are taxed on worldwide income, with a credit for foreign tax. For foreigners not there for work, residence starts in the thirteenth month of presence.
