Singapore bank accounts for non-residents

Overview
Singapore is Asia's other major banking centre alongside Hong Kong, with strong local banks and a large private banking industry. For non-residents it is also one of the more selective places to open an account: banks want a clear reason why the relationship belongs in Singapore and evidence that the money and the activity make sense together.
Singapore bank account for non-residents: requirements
- A valid passport and recent proof of residential address for each account holder, signatory and beneficial owner.
- A tax residency self-certification with your tax identification number; banks have used this form for every new account since 1 January 2017.
- Evidence of income or wealth and of where the first deposit comes from.
- A reason for banking in Singapore: Asian customers, suppliers, investments, employment or family.
- For companies: constitutional documents, registers of shareholders and controllers, an ownership chart and a description of the business and its counterparties.
Open a Singapore bank account online as a non-resident?
MAS rules allow banks to onboard customers without meeting them, provided the checks are at least as robust as face-to-face due diligence (MAS Notice 626). How a bank applies that to non-residents is its own decision. For a first account, especially a business or private banking account, many banks still ask for a branch visit or a meeting with a banker.
Business accounts and the company question
Singapore banks are most comfortable with companies incorporated in Singapore that have local management, staff or customers. A foreign company can apply, but expect close questions on why its account should sit in Singapore. Redomiciled arranges Singapore banking introductions only; we do not form Singapore companies. If you are choosing an Asian base for a company, compare Hong Kong, where we handle both formation and banking. Singapore's headline corporate income tax rate is 17%.
Reporting under CRS and FATCA
Singapore has exchanged financial account information with partner jurisdictions under the CRS since September 2018. US persons are reported under a reciprocal FATCA agreement in force since 1 January 2021. A Singapore account is therefore visible to the tax authority where you are resident.
Banks versus payment institutions
Multi-currency wallets offered by licensed payment institutions are not bank deposits. MAS has stated that e-money is not protected by deposit insurance; larger issuers must safeguard customer money instead, which protects against the issuer's insolvency but with less certainty about how much is recovered and how quickly.
We prepare the file and introduce you to the banks in our network that fit your profile; each bank makes its own decision, and approval is not guaranteed.
Banking in our network
We do not publish institution names: the right partner depends on your profile, and each institution keeps its own view on who it will serve.

Banking partners
- Our Singapore network covers corporate and private banking. Every application goes through the bank's own due diligence.
- Banks look for a Singapore connection: management, staff, customers, suppliers or investments in the region. Without one, expect more questions or a referral to a private banking desk with higher expectations on relationship size.
- Plan for at least one in-person step and for follow-up questions after the first review, particularly on source of wealth.
- Most international clients hold US dollars or other foreign currencies, which fall outside Singapore's deposit insurance. Size balances per bank with that in mind.
Questions
Can a non-resident open a bank account in Singapore?
Yes, but banks are selective. They open personal and business accounts for non-residents after their own due diligence, and many want a clear Singapore connection. Expect to show identity, address, tax residency and the source of your money; approval is never guaranteed.
What are the requirements for a Singapore bank account for non-residents?
Typically a passport, proof of residential address, a tax residency self-certification with your tax number, evidence of income or wealth and a reason for banking in Singapore. Companies add constitutional documents, registers of shareholders and controllers and a description of their business and customers.
Can I open a Singapore bank account online as a non-resident?
Rarely for a first account. MAS permits remote onboarding if the checks are at least as robust as in person, but each bank decides how to apply that to non-residents. Many still require a branch visit or a meeting with a banker, especially for business and private banking accounts.
Are foreign currency deposits insured in Singapore?
No. The Deposit Insurance Scheme covers Singapore-dollar deposits only, up to SGD 100,000 per depositor at each full bank or finance company. Foreign currency deposits, structured deposits and investment products are not insured, and neither is e-money held with payment institutions.
Does Singapore report my account to my home country?
Yes, if you are tax resident in a partner jurisdiction. Singapore banks collect tax residency details under the CRS, and Singapore has exchanged account data since September 2018. US persons are reported under the reciprocal FATCA agreement in force since 2021.
Do I need a Singapore company for a Singapore business account?
Not by law, but banks are most comfortable with Singapore-incorporated companies that have local substance. A foreign company can apply if it has a real reason to bank in Singapore, such as Asian customers or suppliers. Redomiciled arranges the banking introduction; we do not incorporate Singapore companies.
Hong Kong or Singapore for business banking?
Both are demanding and both reward substance. Singapore taxes companies at a headline 17% and favours a local presence; Hong Kong is where Redomiciled also forms companies. The better choice depends on where your customers, suppliers and management are, and which banks accept your profile.

Ranking Every Banking Jurisdiction (2026 Tierlist)
Most people rank offshore banking by country. That’s the wrong approach. After opening more than 650 bank accounts across 48 jurisdictions, I’ve learned that success has very little to do with the country itself. It comes down to one thing: matching your profile to a bank’s risk appetite.
